Borschemich was the first village in Erkelenz to be relocated for the Garzweiler open-cast mine in 2006. The old village was located in the far east of the city. The relocation of the old village of Borschemich to the site in the north of Erkelenz, near the city center, officially ended in 2016. Today, the village, with its green spaces, infrastructure, and buildings, is vibrant and characterful as a new village. In remembrance of the old village, the Borschemich linden tree was replanted in the center of the village as a symbol. Further souvenir photos are located at the multi-purpose hall. The central green corridor features a very large and diverse playground.
