It has only been officially clear since autumn 2023: the Erkelenz village of Keyenberg will be preserved and will not be excavated. The same applies to the neighboring towns of Kuckum, Berverath, Unter- and Oberwestrich. Before the resettlement began, Keyenberg had over 800 inhabitants; currently only a few of the original residents still live there. The village has a very unique atmosphere, which is characterized by the fact that most of the houses and buildings have been empty for years. Plans are currently underway under the leadership of the city of Erkelenz on how to revitalize the old church village. Curiously, the resettlement process is officially ongoing until mid-2026. Residents are still leaving the old village. Nevertheless, plans for the future are underway: Keyenberg is only a few hundred meters from the edge of the open-cast mine, where a very large lake will be created from the mid-2030s. There are numerous large and very beautiful farms in the village, which should be preserved in any case, like many other buildings that are worth renovating.
