The church is also sometimes called "Sint-Hiloniuskerk". It is one of the first large neo-Gothic churches in West Flanders. The foundations of the current church were probably built in the eleventh or twelfth century and underwent various renovations over the years. The first wooden church was probably built by Saint Tillo himself. The tower is 83 metres high, the most pointed in Belgium.
Tillo was a man of Saxon descent and must have been born at the beginning of the seventh century.
(Later Saint) Eligius sent Tillo to the monks of Solignac, where he received training and later did Christian work in Flanders. He managed to 'convert' quite a few people to Christianity, especially in the area around Kortrijk and Tournai.
After the death of his teacher Eligius, he returned to Solignac. Later he retreated further as a hermit. He died in the year 702.

Step inside the church. It contains a few special elements, including the stained glass windows in the choir and side choirs (1902); altarpiece with three bas-reliefs, a 19th century Pieta in polychrome pine; an organ from 1926 (above the door with stained glass window).
