Best Hikes to Roeselare–Leie Canal

Tips

  • The Roeselare-Leie Canal is a shipping canal between the city of Roeselare and the Leie in Wielsbeke. It is 16.5 kilometres long. Via the Leie, it connects the port of Roeselare with the ports of Dunkirk, Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels and Liège.
It was dug between 1862 and 1872. It provided a lot of employment. Ships fully loaded (up to 600 tonnes for the port of Roeselare) with grain, sand and other basic products sailed up the canal to supply the companies on the banks of the canal.
In 2020, the canal is good for more than 4 million tonnes of transported goods per year.
