The village centre of Gits has already had to deal with flooding during heavy rainfall on several occasions. A great deal of water flows from the northern flank of the ridge via the Prinnebeek to the centre of Gits. After the flooding of 27 and 28 July 2014, the municipality of Hooglede and the provincial watercourse service joined forces and plans for a controlled flood area took shape. The municipality purchased the land. The province carried out the works in September - October 2016.
