The Leysiel barrage fulfills several functions: The 30-meter-wide sluice supports the drainage function of the facilities in Greetsiel and Leybuchtsiel. The 200-hectare reservoir located within the dike serves both to absorb the water flowing through the sluices and as a storage area when inland water is pumped in via pumping stations during storm surges lasting several days.
