In any case, it was customary in imperial times to plant an oak tree in honor or memory of an emperor. Perhaps this tree was planted in 1897 on the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I. That would fit the timing. But it could also be that the honor was intended for Kaiser Wilhelm II, one of his successors. He is said to have planned to pay a visit to Scharmbeck on his journey from Bremen to Bremerhaven. However, there was a delay on the way, so the flying visit to Scharmbeck had to be cancelled.
