The Frankfurt garden artist Heinrich Siesmayer (1817–1900) had a lifelong dream: to have a large tree nursery in the Frankfurt am Main area, where he would grow many different types of ornamental and fruit trees and create an educational garden for anyone interested. In 1883, the time had come: the 25-hectare area at Vilbel train station (now South Station) was ideal for his idea – the good Wetterau soil was perfect and the direct proximity to the railway also made transport possible. After the soil had been dug up, the paths laid out and the young trees planted, the first trees were sold in 1889.
