An impressive, large church in the small town of Schmalkalden. On the site of the present church, St. Mary's Church stood as a Romanesque predecessor. Its lower section has been preserved as a southwest tower. The tower's window arcades date back to the late 12th century. Due to dilapidation, the tower was demolished down to the second floor in 1434.Construction of St. George's Church began in 1437 and lasted until 1509. The new building was constructed around the Romanesque church. A seam and the Romanesque round arches of the windows in the highest of the three towers still show where the old and new churches were connected. The new church was consecrated by the Bishop of Würzburg in 1500.Source and further information: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtkirche_St._Georg_(Schmalkalden)

If you want to see the inside of the church, you should be there in the morning. When I wanted to go in at 12.30, the last door was just being closed.
