The Schwedenschanze was built during the Thirty Years' War to protect against the invasion of the Swedish army from the north

The Swedish ramparts near Rading were built in 1641 by Konrad von Starhemberg, the landowner, on the orders of the governor of "Austria above the Enns". The old salt road, later known as the "Bohemian road", passed right here, at the southernmost point of Bohemia, a particularly important point.

Swedish armies were stationed immediately north of this defensive structure (Hohenfurth and Weigetschlag) in 1645, but were reluctant to attempt to capture it.

The "Swedish ramparts" were occupied by imperial troops three times in total_

      1641 to 1648: Swedish threat

      1663: Turkish threat

      1680/81: Plague threat
