(World) history was made here: In 1970, some workers were killed in clashes with the militarized police called KOMO. Ten years later, Lech Walesa led the workers on a new series of strikes to fight the Soviet rulers. The movement was called Solidarity (Solidarnosc). What began as a battle over meat prices grew into the Solidarity union with 10 million members. The Soviet regime finally fell apart.
