This is not surprising, as in the past, the priest was often also the village teacher. In many parishes, the priest was the sole contact for education. He was responsible not only for the spiritual care of the parish, but also for the education of the children, often referred to as preceptor or schoolmaster. This role of the priest as teacher was widespread until the 18th century, before specialized teachers and schools developed. Next to the church is the old schoolhouse.
