In front of the city wall stands the monument to the important Alzey vine grower Georg Scheu (1879-1949). Georg Scheu was the first director of the Alzey vine nursery, which he expanded into a large state-run vine breeding institute. Scheu's cross breeding resulted in the well-known grape varieties Scheurebe, Huxel, Faber and Siegerrebe as well as Kanzler, Würzer, Regner and Septimer.

Every second weekend in May, everything in Alzey revolves around the famous vine grower Georg Scheu and his variety "Sämling 88", which is popular far beyond Alzey. Better known as Scheurebe. Incidentally, he was friends with Fritz Huxel (1892-1972) from Westhofen; the two of them did a lot for German winegrowing! Thank you!
