Milz is one of the oldest settlements in the Thuringian Grabfeld. The place was first mentioned in a document in 783: The abbess Emhilt acknowledged in a document the founding of the monastery in Milz. The monastery was richly wealthy and therefore constantly threatened by Slavic tribes from Bohemia. At the time of the Gau constitution, the place was an imperial property of great prestige and was treated like a city. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Milz had a rich commercial life, and the economy and trade flourished. There were three gates in the town, two of which had to be demolished because they were dilapidated. Only the building of the Upper Gate has survived all the turmoil of time. The gatehouse, which was renovated in 1993/94, is considered a landmark of the village alongside the fortified church built in 1520.

To the southeast, the village was protected from attacks by the course of the Milz river, while to the northwest it was surrounded by a wide, semi-circular ditch. This type of fortification is still visible on the church today. The favorable traffic location on the old trade route from Königshofen via St. Bernhard to the Werra valley was of great economic, political and ecclesiastical importance. It played a key role in the construction of a post office in Milz in 1650. At that time, the horse-riding messenger traveled twice a week from Nuremberg via Bamberg and Milz to Meiningen.

The numerous half-timbered houses still bear witness to the craftsmanship of their residents. The entire town center was listed as a historical monument in 1992.
