Today's church is the successor to two village churches, the origins of which lie in the Middle Ages. At that time, both Forlitz and neighboring South Wolda (later Blaukirchen) had their own church. After the severe destruction caused by the Christmas flood of 1717, the parishes appointed a common pastor from 1719. He then preached alternately in Forlitz and Blaukirchen on Sundays and public holidays. Church and poor assets initially remained separate. Each village had its own schoolmaster.

Structurally, both buildings were in poor condition and were again affected by the February flood of 1825. For this reason, and due to the high contribution burden of the Niederemsische Deichacht, the parish of Forlitz felt compelled to apply for the parish to be included in the neighboring parish of Blaukirchen. The negotiations about it dragged on for a long time, so that the unification into a parish could only be completed in 1844. During this time, the planning for a replacement of the already dilapidated churches at a different location began.
