The city's landmark is an incredible 91 meters long and was built in 1191. A small wooden chapel originally stood on the site. It was built next to a spring. Saint Patrick is said to have used the water from this spring to baptize converted Christians around the year 450. Storms and fire damage later meant that a comprehensive renovation in 1860 was unavoidable. Funding for the rehabilitation of Ireland's most important church came from Sir Benjamin Guinness and his family. As a thank you, a bust was dedicated to the generous donor, which you can see today.
