Markgräfler Museum and Müllheim Market Square

Markgräfler Museum

Built around 1800 as the “Zur Krone” inn in the early classicist style of a city palace with architectural influences from neighboring France. After 1830 the facility was expanded with two newly designed wings. Operated as an inn by the Blankenhorn family until 1880. In 1953 the city bought the property and it was used as a town hall until 1973. Museum since 1974.


Marketplace

Since the granting of market rights by Margrave Friedrich Magnus in 1688, a weekly market has been held regularly. The square, which was considerably larger in the 17th century, was rebuilt in the 18th century and paved in 1726. The “town house” housed the community hall until 1825; The “Winzerhaus” served as a school building from 1789 to 1846. From the balcony of the townhouse, Gustav von Struve proclaimed the Republic during his attempted uprising in September 1848. 1979 Inauguration of the new fountain, designed by Stuttgart sculptor Heinz Pistol.
