Loffeld was first mentioned in 1272, when Bishop Berthold of Bamberg donated, among other things, the tithes in "Lochuelt" to Sonnefeld Monastery. This mention is questionable, however. It is certainly mentioned in 1416, when Staffelstein and the surrounding villages were separated from the Bamberg provostship. The place name means "field near the forest."
