The wreck is not just a sports boat left behind by chance, but a historical relic with a turbulent past:
The Disaster: On March 25, 1945, the "Marie" was carrying a cargo of briquettes on the Elbe River near Krautsand when it struck a British mine and sank. Tragically, the captain lost his life.
The Salvage: The wreck was discovered by chance in 1979. Since it posed an obstacle to shipping, it was raised. Documents found inside the wreck allowed contact to be made with Altenbruch, where the captain's widow still lived.
