The Pian dei Morti locality is located at 2,000 meters above sea level, above Lake Resia, on the border with Austria, in the upper Venosta Valley, in Alto Adige. The toponym "Pian dei Morti" derives from the fascist-era Italianization of the original German toponym Plamort. The barrier is part of the larger and underlying Passo Resia barrier.

The barrier has a unique characteristic of its kind, in fact it has a very particular anti-tank obstacle, in the shape of "dragon's teeth".

The dragon's teeth were then arranged on three parallel lines and fixed in the ground with the same principle as pile dwellings (piling on marshy ground).

Given the altitude at which the barrier is located - about 2000 meters - the area was buried under a thick layer of snow for much of the year. Even in this situation, the dragon's teeth still managed to carry out their function perfectly, as they still caused the carts that happened to be passing over the cones to run aground, due to the sinking and the consequent impact against the cones themselves.
