Carmine Superiore used to be densely populated. Many mountain farming families from the area around the village practiced intensive agriculture in a terraced cultural landscape. Since the end of the First World War, however, the residents gradually left their homeland because the mountain farming profession did not bring in enough money. Due to lively tourism, however, former locals and new residents have now settled here again, who attach importance to maintaining and preserving the village's traditions. Thanks to intensive restoration measures, the houses are now mostly in good condition.
