    The first church in Jēkabpils was a wooden building, built in the period from 1670 . to 1675 . and the materials for the construction were provided by the Duke Jēkabs of Courland . The Catholic life of Jēkabpils was connected with the Jesuits of Skaistkalne and Jelgava . 1729 . In 2010, the Jesuits of Skaistkalnes and later of Jelgava served the people of Jēkabpils. After the closure of the Jesuit order in Courland, secular priests lived in Jēkabpils. Near the church was the Monastery of the Holy Spirit , which owned vast lands. In 1817, the monastery in Courland ceased to exist . year. Later, in 1721 . In 1990, the land was taken over by the Uniates and they founded their own monastery. In 1773 the old church burned down. year.

    Later there was a wooden chapel, which was built in 1835 by Matejs Miškevičs.

    The current stone church was built in 1853 under the leadership of Dean Justín Bogdanović. to 1866. for the year. 1903. On April 7, the second Easter, a fire occurred in the church, the origin of which is different. It was struck by lightning, or a fire broke out from a spring candle that the sexton had not extinguished. The church burned down, only the painting of the Virgin Mary survived, which was found among the ruins of the church. The church was restored during the tenure of Dean Teofilas Tomašeckas from 1903. to 1909. for the year. [2] The restoration work was carried out by the road engineer Kazimirs Ževuskis, who, while managing the construction work on the Jelgava – Krustpils railway line, laid the floor of the church from the torn boards of the old Zeļķi bridge, which still survive to this day. A memorial plaque was placed on the church wall in memory of the restorer of the church. Later, the church was damaged in World War I, but restored. 1933 . and the church was consecrated by Bishop Jázeps Rancāns and dedicated to Saint Mary .
