Rodna (in German: Old Rodenau) is an independent town in the Bistrița-Năsăud district. It is located in the mountain range of the Northern Carpathians named after it and has around 6,000 inhabitants. The area has been populated since the Neolithic period. Documents mention the Tatar attacks in 1241 and 1285, among others. The town is mainly inhabited by Romanians (83 percent), but also by Roma, Hungarians and Germans. Mayor Valentin Iosif Grapini of the Social Democratic Party has been in office since 2016.
