This is where American officers used to live during Allied times.

When you turn into Lützelsteiner Weg in Berlin-Dahlem, you almost get the feeling that you have landed in a 1950s American suburb. There are no typical Dahlem villas here, but single-storey, low-rise buildings in the bungalow style. Each with an integrated garage and a large driveway.

In contrast to the usual German housing developments, the front garden is open. There is no fence. Private and public areas merge into one another.

There are thirty almost identical houses in this style on the Lützelsteiner Weg/Reichshofer Str. street, which stretches in a horseshoe shape around the Dreipfuhlpark (see map). The housing development was built in the 1950s for officers of the American armed forces. The higher ranks in particular, who often worked in the nearby "headquarters" on Clayallee, were to be accommodated here with their families in a manner befitting their status and to feel at home.

The houses were excellently equipped, with built-in cupboards, open fireplaces, parquet floors, terraces and large windows overlooking the garden behind the house.

For the lower ranks of officers, a number of two-storey semi-detached houses were built in the neighboring Ripleystrasse, which are connected by a carport. The same type of house was also built in large numbers a little further along Clayallee.

A detailed description of the architecture and floor plans can be found in a very informative brochure from the Berlin State Monument Office, which can be downloaded free of charge. It also contains interesting photos from the 50s and 60s.

The houses in the Dreipfuhlsiedlung are now privately owned and were listed as historical monuments in 1990. Essential architectural and design features may therefore not be changed.
