In the past, Kortemark often had to deal with flooding because the Krekebeek cannot handle the water from the higher surrounding areas during heavy rainfall.
To the east of the village center, the province, together with the municipality, constructed the Krekemeersen, which not only serves as a holding basin but also as a nature and recreation area.
Here, in the west of the village center, there are also a number of buffer ponds between Krekebeek and the railway, which have now also become a beautiful nature reserve. The path ends past a branch of the large frozen fruit, vegetables and herbs company Ardo.
