On the edge of the old town there is a beautiful monument to Marshal Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929). Foch was the hero of the First World War and coordinated the Allied armies in 1918 as joint commander-in-chief of the Western Front. Three nations awarded him the title of Marshal: France, Great Britain and Poland. On November 11, 1918, he represented the Allies at the conclusion of the Armistice of Compiegne, which ended the First World War.
