Verdun Cathedral was badly damaged by shells between 1915 and 1916.
The eastern wing was completely destroyed. The restoration took place from 1920 to 1936 and during this the parts that were hidden in the 18th century were rediscovered and restored. The capitals in the rediscovered eastern crypt are partly Romanesque in Burgundian style. The modern capitals indicate the suffering of the city in the First World War.
