The Wendish rural church community of Calau was probably founded in the 15th century for the Sorbian inhabitants of the communities surrounding Calau. The church building was also built during this period and has been documented since 1520 at the latest. During the Thirty Years' War, the church was burned down around 1635, and reconstruction, which lasted several phases, was completed in 1666. In 1875, the building was rebuilt again and received its neo-Gothic gables. Until the end of the 19th century, sermons were also held in Lower Sorbian in the rural church. From autumn 1966, the building was extensively renovated, and since 1984 the church has been used as a winter church by the Calau parish.
