The slaughterhouses themselves were mostly located outside the city walls, as the trades associated with the disposal of slaughter waste often belonged to the "dishonorable crafts" and therefore could not be established in the city itself. In Breslau (Wrocław), the butchers' guild was concentrated in the small alley "Stare Jatki" (Old Butchers' Stalls). Meat in the Middle Ages was one of the most expensive and important trade goods, which mainly only wealthy citizens and the nobility could afford.
