It was not until the 1990s that the weir was used as a power generator. This means that around 300 households can be supplied with electricity.

In addition, a fish ladder was built for the fish. Right next to it is a boat slide for the paddlers. At the push of a button, the canal is filled with water and can be used when the light is green. This saves the annoying portage.

The Sigmaringen-Laiz hydroelectric power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Danube. The power plant is located in Laiz, a district of Sigmaringen in the Sigmaringen district of Baden-Württemberg. It is owned by the Sigmaringen municipal utility company, a municipal company owned by the city of Sigmaringen.

The entire facility consists of a left-hand weir with two bays, the hydroelectric power plant, a boat ramp, and a fish ladder.

In Laiz, a hydroelectric power plant with an electrical output of 247 kilowatts was built at the Danube weir there between 1998 and 1999.

Together with the Sigmaringen hydroelectric power plant, both plants produce an average of around 2.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This corresponds to approximately three percent of total electricity consumption. The municipal utility company invested around €2.1 million in both hydroelectric power plants at the time.
