The construction was approved in 1885/86 and a new harbor with a special entrance from the Rhine made. In 1904, the security port was upgraded to a trading and transshipment point. For this purpose, a shipyard was built for the first time and laid sidings. Two years later, in 1906, the expansion to the industrial port followed. During the Second World War, large parts of the harbor as well as the two 3- and 6-tonne cranes were badly damaged. It was followed by reconstruction. After the 6-tonne crane had been restored, crane operation resumed on 4 November 1946. On September 25, 1959, a new 5-ton crane was purchased. This investment was the culmination of the reconstruction. In 1963 the further expansion of the industrial port was approved. A 200 meter long sheet pile wall was constructed, the bottom of the harbor lowered to 6.5 NN and the harbor basin widened to 80 meters. In addition, a new industrial site was created. 1968 then the first container transport was completed. However, with the cranes available, only 8-foot containers could be handled at that time, which proved detrimental to other ports. After the construction of a modern container handling system with a load capacity of 30 to 40 tons had been tested in 1968, the City Council of Emmerich decided on 20 May 1969 to set up such a large container handling facility. In 1973, this began operation. 1982 to 1984 followed by further investment in the expansion of the port. The sheet pile wall has been doubled, so that since then two ships can be cleared at the same time.

Today, the industrial port facility in the Löwenberger Landwehr comprises around 35,000 square meters. They are partly operated by the Rhein-Waal-Terminal GmbH (RWT), which was founded in 1987. The core business is overseas container transport. With a quay length of 280 + 40 meters, two berths and two gantry cranes with a load capacity of up to 50 tons are available for container loading. These each have an overhang of 80 m and also span the two outgoing sidings on the pier. The reefer connections required for refrigerated containers are not yet available there. [5]

300 meters further east is the dock of Oleon Chemie. At 240 meters of banked shore, two freight motor vessels can also be handled simultaneously. The handling facilities there specialize in liquid goods, and pipelines lead across the railway line directly to the factory premises. To the east there is a third transshipment point in the Löwenberger Landwehr. This belongs to the German Giessdraht Gesellschaft, has at 110 m quay on its own crane and also has a rail connection to directly on the pier.

An extension of the terminal is planned on the eastern side of the harbor basin and a third container bridge is to be built there. Since the area is a fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH), extensive approval procedures are still required until the area can be reallocated to a special harbor area.

"The tradition of the Emmerich Rhine port dates back to the middle of the 17th century: the first harbor basin was first mentioned in documents in 1640. Today, Rhein-Waal Terminal GmbH is part of Contargo trimodal network, the operator of the port.

This shows that the trimodal location in Emmerich, with its immediate proximity to the Netherlands, fully meets the requirements of a globalized logistics economy. Due to its location on the Rhine, the BAB 3, which can be reached in just a few minutes, and the direct rail connection to the Oberhausen-Arnhem railway line, the Emmerich am Rhein location combines the most important modes of transport for logistics companies.

These location advantages and the performance of RWT GmbH as a transshipment service provider are impressively documented by the establishment of the 80,000 m² central warehouse of Konica Minolta Deutschland GmbH in Emmerich am Rhein." wfg-kreis-kleve.de/de/kreis-kleve/port-emmerich
