The shards of earthenware with ornamentation found at the foot of the Riekstu Hill Fort show that it was already inhabited by Finno-Ugric tribes from the 1st to the 6th century.

Around the 10th century, the Wendi tribe who moved from North Kurzeme chose the hill as their place of residence and built a wooden fort here. The became Christianized when the Livonian Order arrived and accepted the warrior monks into their fort. The Livonian Order then built their stone castle right next to the wooden fort.
