The annals of the city archives show that as early as 1481 a "Schubart" (shoemaker) had to pay his dues to the city. The oldest city accounts from 1631 - 1698 show that Burgkunstadt was already distinguished by its many tanneries and its "Schubarts" in the 17th century.

On three floors, visitors are shown both the artisanal and mechanical production of shoes.

The German Shoemaker Museum in Burgkunstadt is intended to show all visitors and future generations what was once the economic center of the city of Burgkunstadt for over 100 years.
