If there weren't an information board here, you wouldn't realize that the historic Limes Saxoniae ran here in Bornhöved. It's very good that this is being commemorated here.

The Limes Saxoniae, also called the Saxon Wall, is a border strip built by the Saxons around 810 AD to protect themselves from the Slavic Abodrites in eastern Schleswig-Holstein.
The fortification of the border area was probably agreed upon by Charlemagne in 810/11 during his last stay in northern Germany, when the Eider River was also established as the northern border of the empire.

With this border fortification, part of the territory handed over to the Abotrites in 804 was re-incorporated into the Frankish Empire, which now bordered the Baltic Sea on a narrow strip between the Levensau and the Schwentine. The border fortifications were further expanded under Louis the Pious, but could not provide lasting protection against raids and conquests by the Abodrites, who were able to advance as far as Hamburg and destroy the city in 1066 and 1072.

The raids only ended with the subjugation and Christianization of the Abodrites and the conquest of East Holstein by the Counts of Holstein.

The route essentially follows natural obstacles, rivers, swamps, and impassable forests and is by no means as sharply defined or even fortified as the Roman Limes.
