The lake in the Wümme lowlands west of Rotenburg was leased by the AngelsportVerein Wümme e.V. as early as 1936; In 1968 the Kattensteertsee became the property of the association. In the 1970s, the water area was increased in two "stages" (1972 and 1977) from 1.5 hectares to 2.2 hectares. The Kattensteertsee is up to 3 meters deep. Noteworthy are the two bird protection islands created by the expansion, which, inaccessible to any public traffic, offer numerous bird species a nesting place.
