Tips

  • Manfred Bargsten

The Nord-Ostee-Kanal interrupts the roads in Brunsbüttel. Here the ferries come into play. No sooner are you on the ferry, barrier down, it starts really. This is almost like in Hamburg at the departure of the S-Bahn. You do not have much time to look at the locks. Schwupp-die-wupp are you over there. I think that's impressive.

Like all ferries over the NOK, this is also free for all and every vehicle and also offers a beautiful view of the lock!

Here you can see almost all sizes of ships at close range, as they lock in or out. The NOK is the world's busiest artificial waterway.

A big ferry compared to the kids on the canal. Fast translation is possible here.

One of 14 ferries on the Kiel Canal.
    The crossing is free.

14 ferries cross the Kiel Canal and connect the two shores. The ferry passages are free for vehicles and passengers. Basis for the free crossing of the channel is the obligation of the German Reich, in the context of the construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) in the years 1887 to 1895 free transitions for the interrupted by the canal construction roads provide.

Due to the high volume of traffic in Brunsbüttel and Nobiskrug at Rendsburg two ferries are side by side in use
The ferries on the Kiel Canal are barges with a standard capacity of 45 tons and carrying up to eight cars. Two Voith Schneider propellers ensure good maneuverability.
The carrying capacity of the ferries regularly used in Brunsbüttel is 100 tonnes. Up to 21 cars can be transported simultaneously.
The ferry captains must have a nautical patent. A deckhand helps them to load and unload the car ferry.
