The monastery is over 900 years old and originated from the oldest Benedictine monastery in the Margraviate of Meissen. Over the centuries, this monastery developed into a very wealthy charitable foundation for unmarried daughters of noble landowners. Currently, no nuns live in the monastery; instead, it houses the city administration, and since 1995, a family-friendly zoo has been open to visitors.
