The first plans for the construction of the church date from 1931. André Driessen from Genk (1893-1976, around the same time also architect of the former Sint-Jansziekenhuis in Genk) was appointed as architect, who made a preliminary design. In 1933, pastor Jozef Geurts asked his friend Joseph Coenen to help him with this and he studied the dilapidated Gothic church of the former abbey of Hocht in order to build a replica of it in Wiemesmeer. In 1935, construction of the choir mast began; the mast followed in 1940.
