The church in Tilst was built around 1170 on an old sun worship site in Romanesque style. It consisted of a chancel and nave built of granite blocks. The late Gothic west tower and the porch on the south side were added in the late 1400s/early 1500s.

A special feature of the church are the two checkerboard stones:
a stone on the east side of the portal in the vestibule. 2nd row above the floor
a stone on the southeast corner of the choir
