Admiralty slipway at the Grootdiep
The Grootdiep was the seaport of Dokkum. From 1596 to 1645, the Frisian-Groningen Admiralty was located here. The Admiralty had its own shipyard. The shipyard in the photo shows a remnant of this. The buildings of the Frisian-Groningen Admiralty were located opposite the shipyard from 1618. After 1645, the Dokkumerdiep began to silt up and the Admiralty was moved to Harlingen. In 1795, at the beginning of the French period, the institute was dissolved. The main building in Dokkum was demolished in the 18th century. The remaining buildings now house the Municipal Museum.
