Considered the oldest baroque-style church in Flanders, it was the first church dedicated to the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius of Loyola, although it was later dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, after the suppression of the Jesuits.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Charles Borromeo (Dutch: Sint-Carolus Borromeus-Kerk) near the city library is a former Jesuit church in the Baroque style and a protected cultural monument. It was built between 1614 and 1621.
