Small canal on Hofweg - it connects the 'Uhlenhorster Kanal' and the 'Langer Zug' canal
July 19, 2024
The Hofwegkanal is a canal in the Hamburg district of Uhlenhorst. It runs north-south along the street of the same name, connecting the Osterbekkanal with the Uhlenhorster Kanal over a distance of 650 meters. In the northern section from the Osterbekkanal to the ferry bridge it is 15 meters wide, in the southern part up to the Uhlenhorster Kanal it is only 10 meters wide. From the southern part, about halfway along the Hofwegkanal, a 105 meter long branch canal branches off to the west. In the middle of the 19th century, a consortium led by the Hamburg entrepreneur and land speculator August Abendroth developed the area near the Alster, which later became the district of Uhlenhorst. Canals were built for drainage, most of which were later filled in again. The Hofwegkanal and the Uhlenhorster Kanal remained. Four bridges cross the canal: Grillparzerbrücke, Fährbrücke, Karlstraßenbrücke and Gustav-Freytag-Brücke.
