The building was built in 1879 according to plans by Severin, the chief building officer. The old wooden building of the port captain was destroyed in 1872 by the Świna flood. During World War II, the harbor office was only slightly damaged. There is a sign on the building showing the flood level in 1913. The Polish port authority Kapitanat is located directly at the port in Świnoujście. The Maritime Office has been restored and is a monument worth seeing in the port city.
