The “Happy Buddha”, also known as the Laughing Buddha or Budai, is an iconic figure in Buddhism and is particularly popular in China, Japan and Thailand. Unlike the classical Buddha, which represents Siddhartha Gautama, the Laughing Buddha symbolizes happiness, prosperity and contentment. With his round belly, broad smile and often with a sack full of gifts or gold coins, he is worshipped as a bringer of wealth and positive energy.

In Thailand, statues of the Happy Buddha can be found in many temples, often alongside traditional Buddha depictions. A particularly well-known large statue is in Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan in Chachoengsao and in some temples in Bangkok, such as Wat Yannawa. He is often depicted with the five children, who represent blessings and happiness.
