Johann Wilhelm II (18th Elector Palatine, in the vernacular: "Jan Wellem") ruled as Duke of Jülich and Berg from 1679 to 1716. In autumn, the Elector went hunting in Königsforst. Jan Wellem's second wife Anna Maria Luisa de Medici raved about the view of the old Bensberg Castle on the hilly surroundings, which reminded them of their home, Tuscany.Presumably for the sake of his wife, Jan Wellem built the new hunting lodge in Baroque style between 1703 and 1711.
