      Palace and adjacent upper gate

The Württemberg residential palace in Grüningen became obsolete in 1704 with the construction of Ludwigsburg Palace. Until 1806, it was used only as a bailiwick, and from 1758 onward as a district court. In 1724, dilapidated parts had to be demolished, and the stones were carted to Ludwigsburg for reuse. After the dissolution of the district court of Gröningen, the palace was used as a workhouse for the execution of penal servitude. From 1870 onward, it was converted into a "teacher's seminary" with an attached orphanage, which began teaching in May 1873. In 1908, the infirmary was demolished. The current north wing was relocated slightly to the north and built in conjunction with the central building. It stands partly on the former Zwinger palace and partly on the outer moat. The courtyard was extended to the north.

The orphanage was closed in 1917. In 1932, the most modern gymnasium in the district at the time was built east of the north wing. The teachers' college was transferred to Esslingen University in 1935. From April 1935 until its closure due to the war in March 1945, the "Aufbauschule Markgröningen" (Markgröningen Advanced School) with a boarding school for gifted elementary school students operated in the building complex of the former castle. After the 7th grade, these students could transfer to Markgröningen and take their school leaving examinations there.

During the war, the castle cellar located beneath the former palace was converted for air raid protection. It was divided into three sections by two partition walls with gas-tight steel doors and provided with an emergency exit at the former cellar entrance. After the castle had served as a home for liberated prisoners of war and Allied forces, the school was again used as a college for prospective teachers from July 1946 to 1950. Subsequently, a state-owned "Aufbaugymnasium mit Heim" (advanced secondary school with a dormitory) was established again, renamed the "Helene Lange School" in 1954. In the 1970s, more and more male students joined the school. The boarding school was closed in 1987. In 1988, the state transferred ownership and the school grounds to the school association established by the city and district.
