The open field was originally a large pasture where horses were grazed for logging work in the area. In the years 1927/1928, there was a popular 5-hole golf course with a clubhouse here. After a change of ownership at the sawmill, the area was planted with oats until after the Second World War to cover the feed requirements for the horses.
Since 2004, the area has been regularly flooded due to beaver activity in the area and has become a wetland.
