The Tholey Abbey Church was built between 1260 and the end of the 13th century as a three-aisled church without a transept in the Gothic style.
The Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius Tholey is the oldest monastery founded on German soil. A church complex has been located here since the beginning of the 7th century. Benedictine monastic life in Tholey probably began around 750. In 1260, construction began on the early Gothic abbey church that is known today. The portal, the mighty west tower and some clerestory windows were taken from the Romanesque predecessor church. The building was completed around 1300 and served as an abbey and pilgrimage church.
The abbey was closed in 1798, and the church and abbey buildings were auctioned off. In 1806, a citizen of Tholey acquired the remaining buildings and donated them to the community as a parish church and residence for the priest. Since then, the Tholey Abbey Church has also been the parish church of the municipality of Tholey. The abbey church has been a joint parish and abbey church since the monks from St. Matthias Abbey in Trier resettled there in 1949 and has been owned by the abbey since 2018. 12 monks still live there today according to the rules of St. Benedict. She visited the beautiful church because of the stained glass windows designed by Gerhard Richter.
