The 894m above sea level NN high Hohe Hölle forms a double peak with the neighboring slightly lower Himmeldunkberg. Here is the north-eastern end of the Dammersfeld massif. The numerous boundary stones of the border between the former kingdoms of Prussia and Bavaria, which has been running here since 1866, still mark the Hessian-Bavarian federal state border today. Before 1866 (Austrian-Prussian War) Gersfeld and its surroundings were Bavarian for about 50 years. Before that or before the upheavals of the Napoleonic era, the rule of Gersfeld was a knightly area that was directly related to the empire.
