Visitors enter the crypt via an 80-meter-long corridor reminiscent of a trench. In the middle is the ossuary. It contains the bones of 12,000 unknown soldiers and is covered with a bronze shield six meters in diameter. The shield bears the inscription "Patrie" (Fatherland) in gold letters.
